A working smoke alarm is the single most important tool to alert you and your family to a fire. The Independence Fire Department is committed to ensuring every home in our community is protected. Through our Smoke Alarm Program, we provide and install free smoke alarms for eligible residents.

What Our Free Program Includes

  • One or more free 10-year sealed-battery smoke alarms.
  • Professional and safe installation by trained personnel from the Independence Fire Department.
  • A brief home safety consultation and instructions on how to test and maintain your new alarm.

Eligibility Requirements

This program is currently available to homeowners residing within the Independence Fire Department service area. If you are a renter, we encourage you to discuss smoke alarm requirements with your landlord or contact us for more information.
